Founding UAV Engineer
Mechanical Design & Avionics Integration
The opportunity
Synthmind develops software and aircraft systems for operators working in demanding environments, including search and response. Leo and Neso are currently in engineering and simulation development. Physical prototypes and flight validation are the work ahead.
This is an early, hands-on engineering role. We are planning a workshop in Athens; the premises are not yet established. Initial work will include design reviews, component sourcing and defining the workshop’s technical requirements. Regular on-site assembly and testing will follow once the space is ready.
What you’ll own
- Develop and refine mechanical designs, CAD assemblies, component mounts and manufacturing drawings.
- Select materials and manufacturing methods, considering weight, serviceability and practical assembly.
- Source components, maintain bills of materials and build aircraft prototypes.
- Integrate propulsion, power distribution, flight controllers, sensors and communications.
- Plan and carry out bench tests, troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues, and document results.
- Support progressive flight validation with appropriate facilities, procedures and supervision.
- Help specify workshop tools and equipment within an agreed budget.
What you’ll bring
- Practical experience designing, assembling and testing UAVs or closely related robotic systems.
- Strong mechanical CAD skills and the ability to turn a design into a physical assembly.
- Experience wiring, configuring and troubleshooting aircraft electronics and avionics.
- A methodical approach to testing, documentation and resolving failures.
- The ability to take ownership in a small team and work regularly on site in Athens.
Useful experience
These are helpful additions to your core experience.
- Fixed-wing, VTOL or multirotor prototype experience.
- Familiarity with PX4, ArduPilot, composites, machining or additive manufacturing.
- Embedded software or PCB design experience.
Your initial focus
Review the existing designs, identify the main build risks, agree a prototype priority, and establish a documented path through assembly and bench testing.
Tell us about your work
Tell us about a drone or robotic system you personally built. What did you own, what failed, and how did you resolve it? Links to non-confidential build photographs or project work are welcome.
Please share only work you are permitted to disclose. Keep confidential client, employer and operational information out of your application.
